One of the key elements within STEPS is the application of matrix models for the rational and transparent selection of medicines.These matrix models are developed and marketed by Digitalis BV Amsterdam, a publisher of web based prescription guidelines and decision analysis and practice support systems. Based on the widespread user experiences in the Netherlands and in collaboration with the Northern Trust and Social Care Trust and the Queens University of Belfast,some of these matrix models were adapted and piloted in Northern Ireland.
Following this successful pilot phase, for the further commercialisation of STEPS, Digitalis Medicines Management ltd was established in 2008 as a daughter company of Digitalis BV in close collaboration and partnership with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. This partnership encompasses R&D activities related to the development of many more STEPS productions and roll out of STEPSelect in other interested regions in Ireland and the UK.
STEPSelect will be the tradename of all related web and workshop tools, reports and consultancy services to make this successful approach in medicines management also work in other territories outside Northern Ireland!
