Integration of Prescribing and Medicines Management
It is realistic that - next to a common ground based on (inter)national consensus about treatment guidelines - national, regional and/or local guidelines differ in one way or another dependent on how often changes in the context of medicines management are applied. This means that on a certain level of detail one should be able to locally adapt a guideline, given local dynamics e.g. in professional consensus and procurement efforts. In Northern Ireland, for example, STEPS (Safe Therapeutic Economic Pharmaceutical Selection) methodology is applied as a Medicines Management Tool for the selection of preferred medicines, leading to better quality and safety of medicine use in a more cost-effective setting.
