The electronic prescription processing improves communication of the prescribed therapy to the patient and the pharmacist, and should be advocated more to pursue better quality, safety and efficiency in the pharmacotherapy chain. Prescriptor-EPS is designed as an essential link in this chain of support systems, in order to promote problem- and patient- oriented prescribing and to deliver better quality in patient care. One can draw a parallel between electronic prescribing and car navigation systems. A navigation system helps a driver to find a time-efficient and complication-avoiding way of reaching the desired destination. Road maps are less instrumental in this matter, because they lack the real time, parallel and background information processing from multiple sources that is essential. However, even with the assistance of the prescribing system, the autonomy of the prescriber is not sacrificed. The professional remains in the driving seat, and a proper “driving license” is still essential to control and master this process. And at the end of the road after an intermediate period of prejudices, doubts, fear of less control and customization, one will confess that ultimate freedom in this respect is more complex, is more time-absorbing and asks for more real time factual knowledge.
